Guest Speaker: Richard Umbers
Topic: The changing face of retail – what’s in store?
Richard will explore the nature of disruption to retail and give some insight into how the industry is responding, and how we will all shop in the future.
Richard Umbers was until recently CEO of Myer, a position he held for three years, during a period of significant industry disruption and change. Under his leadership, Myer embarked on a significant investment program, to reposition the retail offer, and pivot the business towards online and digital as a source of future growth. Under Richard’s stewardship, online enjoyed spectacular growth and became a major contributor to the business.
Prior to joining Myer, Richard was the CEO of express logistics carrier StarTrack and the EGM for Parcel Services at Australia Post. He had responsibility for the enterprise wide eCommerce program, a major change initiative designed to position Australia Post to take advantage of the shift to online.
Richard has previously held a range of senior and General Management positions in fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) retailing, including as Managing Director of supermarket chain Progressive Enterprises in New Zealand, and as MD for North West UK and Ireland for discount grocery retailer Aldi.
Richard holds an MSc in Finance from the University of Leicester (UK), and a BSc in Geology and Geography from The University of Exeter (UK). He is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Richard lives in Melbourne and is a keen cyclist.
