James Sutherland has been Chief Executive Officer of Cricket Australia since 2001. James, a former fast/medium bowler who played for cricket for Victoria, brings a life-long interest and involvement in the game to his role as CEO.
James has played a key role in the continuing on and off-field professionalism of the sport of cricket, including significant reforms in cricket’s governance and financial model, restructuring of Australian team performance management, an increased focus on women’s cricket and launching new initiatives such as a digital media partnership with Nine Entertainment Corporation and the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash League.
James was educated at Melbourne University and qualified as a chartered accountant, working for Ernst & Young before joining Cricket Australia. James is the Chairman of COMPPS – Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports (whose board comprises the CEOs of Cricket, AFL, ARU, NRL, FFA, Netball and Tennis). He is also a board member of Melbourne University Sport.
